I like to think that I would still want to be a researcher, because I love research, I love learning new things, I love making discoveries (as little as my discoveries are), and helping people through my research.

But to be honest I would probably do my research job part-time and on the side do something else, like run a bookshop or a cafe, or make films, or write books, or make clothes… So many ideas!

I would as I like my job. It is always worth remembering that no job is perfect but if you enjoy it much more than you dislike it, then you are a winner!

      I absolutely would!

I’ve always really enjoyed the consumer research/advertising side of my work, though sometimes I wondered if I should be spending my life getting people to buy more stuff they didn’t know they needed (!)…this is now balanced by teaching, and making my students aware of the other strands to advertising and marketing which are more pro-social, such as public information and behaviour change, and brand-building and fundraising communications for charities. And, I still get to talk to lots of people and travel (and the money is okay too!).

I think so – actually, it would make it easier, as I wouldn’t have to worry about the appalling wages that British universities currently pay scientists. Being a scientist of leisure would be fun, and would allow me to focus on some interesting questions that I have that, because of their obscurity, are unlikely to ever be funded in the real world…

I think I would!! I really enjoy the flexibility of being a researcher and I am passionate about my topic.
